Caravanning from the back seat: The unknown town on the Great Ocean Road – Kennett River edition

Below is an article by Tom McGay for our regular Caravanning from the back-seat feature.

From Torquay to Apollo Bay to Warrnambool, the Great Ocean Road has loads of awesome towns but some just don’t get enough recognition. A town that is definitely worth a night’s stay, but gets nowhere near as much hype as it deserves is Kennett River.

After staying at the Kennett River Holiday Park, I found just how underrated this town really is. If you’re looking for something that’s peaceful and absolutely beautiful then Kennett River might be the place for you. While I was here it’s been a blast, there’s just so much to do in such a peaceful little town! The awesome walk tracks you can go on where you climb higher up the hill, to reach more and more views as you are accompanied by koalas is truly something special. Another awesome way to connect with wildlife here is grabbing some bird seeds and feeding the eye-catching king parrots, not only can you feed them but when you do, they tend to climb on you and rest on your shoulder or arm. I’d also never heard of glowworms until I ran into a group of these little creatures while on a night walk — which was epic.! Fishing, surfing, walks, runs, and much more are all possible in this tiny town.

Interview with Laurence Hennessy

While I was down at Kennett River I was lucky to have the chance to speak with Laurence, a member of the convenience store Café Koala in Kennett River. Whilst speaking to Laurence I learned a few things about Kennett river including its hidden benefit of sheltering wind. You know that feeling when it’s perfect weather and you head to the beach just to find it with raging wind? Well, Kennett River’s spectacular mountain ranges completely block off wind for the whole town. I also learned from Laurence, just how many animals you can find down here – when I went for a run I found a koala crawling on the path!

Kennett River was definitely worth the stay and I’d recommend this to any families. So don’t just drive past this next time on the Great Ocean Road!
