Caring for your caravan

Caring for your caravan

Purchasing a caravan is a big investment – one we think is worth every penny. Once you’ve taken the plunge and purchased your own home on wheels, it’s essential that you take care of it as best you can. That way, you can enjoy epic adventures for years to come!

Tyre maintenance

Perhaps one of the most important things to remember when it comes to caring for your caravan – and your safety on the road – is tyre maintenance. When you are towing a heavy load, tyre care is extra important to ensure that you don’t lose control.

Before each trip, carefully check the condition of the tyres as well as the air pressure. Even if your caravan isn’t being towed often, tyres can still be damaged by the elements, so get your tyres changed every five years or every 10,000 kilometres – whichever comes first.

Check your electronics

Caravanning technology has come leaps and bounds in recent decades, so there are few creature comforts that you have to go without on the road. This does mean that modern caravans are fitted with quite a lot of electronics.

Before every trip, make sure that all of the appliances in the van work, and that any external batteries are fully charged and in working order. If there are any repairs that need to be made, especially on high-voltage items, get a registered electrician in to do the job.

Storage is key

One of the best things you can do to keep your van in top condition is to store it properly. Nothing will speed up the wear and tear of your van like keeping it out in the open, exposed to the elements.

We recommend purchasing a good-quality caravan cover as a bare minimum. This way, you can protect your van from rain and direct sun when it is not in use. If you have a garage, storing your van in there is a great option, but not everyone has the luxury!
