Celebrate country music in Tamworth!

In partnership with Toyota County Music Festival Tamworth

Great music, great people and an atmosphere that can’t be rivalled, the Toyota Country Music Festival, Tamworth, is one event that should feature on every Australian’s bucket list.

January is hot and dry in north-west New South Wales, yet thousands upon thousands of people will flock to Tamworth to experience the magic that is the 52nd Toyota Country Music Festival. So what is it about this iconic festival that has captured the hearts of those who have been, and the imagination of those who are yet to attend?

Is it the prestige of being Australia’s largest country music festival? Featuring over 700 artists at 1800 events, more than 40,000 people per day for 10 days will gather to celebrate all genres within country music. True to its country roots, the festival offers a mix of traditional, country rock Americana, blues, roots, alt-country, bluegrass, honky-tonk, and much more.

The city overflows with musical talent, as artists take to the stage in the park and CBD, venues are pumping and buskers line Peel Street. You don’t have to be a country music lover to enjoy the atmosphere that flows through the festival, as street performers and stalls pop up to entertain the masses.

Perhaps it is the nostalgia of another time for many. The festival has been supporting Australian country music since 1973, capitalising on the success of the Hoedown program on radio 2TM. Many festivalgoers will have memories of watching Slim Dusty, Joy McKean, Smokey Dawson and more perform in Tamworth, and enjoy the celebration of this legacy of Australian country music and the next generation come through. Tamworth has been the home and heart of Australian country music for over five decades, and has launched the careers of Australian country music stars like Keith Urban, Kasey Chambers, Adam Harvey, Troy Cassar-Dale, Beccy Cole and Lee Kernaghan.

For many, it’s the variety of activities on offer across the 10 days. There’s fun to be had at Family Zone, which is full of carnival rides, showbags and games. Alternatively, you can soak up the atmosphere of FanZone and get up-close and personal with performers, while pubs and clubs come alive at night as people enjoy Tamworth’s summer evenings. The riverside campgrounds become a hive of activity, with many caravanners using the festival as an opportunity to meet up with old friends and travellers they have met on the road.
