Delights in the Yarra Valley

Delights in the Yarra Valley

Renowned for its incredible wines, cheeses and smallgoods, the Yarra Valley is the perfect destination for a relaxing daytrip of meandering, tasting and breathing in the fresh valley air. What’s more, the rolling green hills, picturesque vineyards, rustic buildings and alluring mountain ranges are just a stone’s throw away from Melbourne’s outer suburbs.

Coldstream to Yarra Glen

A trip to the Yarra Valley would not be complete without tasting some of the region’s impressive wines. While there are wineries spread throughout the valley, a good place to start is at Coldstream, and then to head north towards Yarra Glen. Along this route, there are many places to stop and admire the picturesque vineyards and stunning scenery, and, more importantly, to taste some wines!

If wine is not your drop of choice, don’t despair – there are plenty of places for you to drop in and savour the best the Yarra Valley has to offer in beer, cider, gin and more. The region has a long beer and cider history, dating back to the early 1800s, and is the birthplace of the Australian champagne cider. Pop into one of the breweries and taste a variety of craft beers and ciders made with apples, pears, and even kiwi fruit!

Yarra Glen to Healesville

Once you’ve whet your appetite with the region’s delectable wines and cheeses, stay a little longer and indulge in a scenic lunch at one of the many wineries. Dine on exquisite dishes that showcase the region’s bountiful harvest, including organic fruit and vegetables, pastas, freshwater fish, cheeses, preserves and olive oils. Alternatively, head into Healesville for lunch and soak up the rustic country feel as you bite down on woodfired pizza and sip house-roasted coffee.

From Healesville, head down the Healesville–Koo Wee Rup Road and then head east along the Warburton Highway to Warburton, a charming town at the base of the Yarra Ranges. Warburton is the perfect destination for a quiet afternoon tea by the Yarra River, which courses through the town, and is flanked by tree ferns and towering mountain ash. Take a 10-minute drive further east through Warburton to see an impressive stand of Californian redwood trees – one of the Yarra Range’s best-kept secrets.
