Find hidden gems in Amazing Forbes this spring

In partnership with Forbes Shire.

Forbes is known for its many amazing qualities – the town is historic, artistic and picturesque, and full of natural beauty and friendly locals. And underneath its crisp, cool exterior are many hidden gems just waiting for you to discover!

Have you heard about Gum Swamp? Gum Swamp Wildlife Refuge (aka Forbes Wetlands) is a glorious natural haven for a wide variety of birdlife (and other fauna), and is a great place to wander. Why not take a peaceful stroll through the nature reserve? You’ll even spy the resident giant goanna surveying the surrounds (we call him ‘Gugaa’) – but don’t worry, he won’t bite, as he’s made entirely out of steel and is part of our amazing Sculpture Down the Lachlan public art trail!

There’s also one newly renovated and three brand-new bird hides that provide enthusiastic birdwatchers the opportunity to view the birdlife in their natural habitat. Bird enthusiasts will be able spot something special from multiple vantage points. The hides are accessible on the first floor, with a stairway to the upper level.

Next, head out along the Lachlan River to discover the rest of Gugaa’s friends – the remaining sculptures on the Sculpture Trail. The trail stretches along the western part of Lachlan Valley Way, snaking alongside the mighty Lachlan River, all the way to Condobolin – approximately 100 kilometres away.

Another lesser-known spot is Back Yamma State Forest, an ideal place for fitness fanatics, located just a few kilometres north of Forbes. It is a great spot for a bit of mountain biking, and comprises both green- and blue-grade trails, which makes it the perfect site for even the youngest trail riders. There is also just the right amount of speed-inducing slopes for the more daring riders.

You can even camp in the state forest for free, and also make use of the barbecue facilities while you’re there (plus, dogs are welcome!).

So, why not find yourself in Amazing Forbes this spring?
