Townsville to Charters Towers

Townsville is a must-visit spot in the Sunshine State! While you’re in town, jump on a ferry over to Magnetic Island to experience a tropical oasis. Once you’ve well and truly explored all that is on offer in Townsville, it’s time to hit the road and head inland towards Charters Towers, which is about an hour and a half by car.

Charters Towers to Hughenden

On the list of must-do activities in Charter Towers is a trip to Leahton Park, where you can embark on a Texas Longhorn Tour. Back in town, be sure to stop at Towers Hill for spectacular views of the region!

Hughenden to Richmond

A visit to Hughenden wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Flinders Discovery Centre, where you’ll find ‘Hughie’, a life-sized replica muttaburrasaurus. At the centre, discover an extensive collection of fossils, and catch a captivating light and sound show.

Richmond to Julia Creek

Richmond sits on the land that used to be part of Australia’s Inland Sea about 97 million years ago. Now, you can discover fossils from this fascinating period at Kronosaurus Korner, which is home to an impressive collection of marine fossils from the Cretaceous era.

From Richmond, continue west along the Flinders Highway for about an hour and a half and find yourself at Julia Creek.

Julia Creek to Cloncurry

If you’ve got relaxation on your mind, be sure to book a stay at Julia Creek Caravan Park, which is home to soothing artesian baths overlooking the vast plains of the outback. These baths draw water from the Great Artesian Basin and will help soothe any aching muscles that you’ve developed on your adventures.

Cloncurry to Mount Isa

In Cloncurry, head to the Cloncurry Mary Kathleen Memorial Park Complex, which is the perfect place to spend an afternoon with the family. You’ll find a playground for the kids here, and a short walking trail that leads to a lookout boasting panoramic views of the region.

In Mount Isa, you can’t go past a visit to Outback at Isa. You’ll find hidden treasures like the Hard Times Mine, which offers a truly immersive experience where you can uncover the town’s rich mining history.
