Before you set off on your exciting journey, it’s important to be mindful of what to pack. Avoid wild weather mishaps and the dreaded ‘Are we there yet?’ question with these road trip essentials.
Prep your car and camper
Before you even think about hitting the road, make sure your car and caravan or camper are serviced and safe. Let your mechanic work their wonders and ensure that you’ve got the most seamless, problem-free trip possible with roadworthy checks, general maintenance and weatherproofing tests. On top of this, make sure your insurance cover is up to date, and that you’ve got access to roadside assistance should any breakdowns occur. If you’re unlucky and run into any trouble, be prepared with spare tyres and a tyre jack, fuel-filled jerry cans, brake fluid, a winch and some jumper cables.
Everyday must-haves
Icy Aussie winters can be as harsh as the scorching summer, so be smart and keep supplies on hand. A first-aid kit is an absolute essential on any trip. Your kit doesn’t have to be extensive, but it should feature basic medicine, bandages and antiseptics to keep everyone healthy. Also, don’t skip out on sunscreen and sunglasses just because it’s cold – you might be on holiday, but the UV rays aren’t!
Soundtrack your holiday
You’re going to be in the car for a long time, and while driving through pristine, lush landscapes and new places is fun, sometimes you need a little more entertainment. Soundtrack your trip’s highs and lows with your favourite songs, radio stations or podcasts to make sure all ears are satisfied even during the darkest night drives or seemingly endless passing paddocks.
Mindful meandering
Conscious cruising in your caravan or camper can be difficult even for the most environmentally savvy road trippers. Muesli bar wrappers at your feet, used tissues stuffed in coat pockets and oily foil remnants after your barbecue snag dinner are all regular sights when holidaying. Despite this, it’s crucial to discard your rubbish properly even in the most remote locations. Avoid littering our beautiful country and come prepared with rubbish bags that you can dispose of once you’re back in town, or even by employing a clean-up-the-car roster at every servo you stop at.
