Silver screen destinations in Australia

We Australians take pride in our picturesque landscapes, diverse locations and welcoming communities. Hollywood has taken notice over the years, using our phenomenal land as a backdrop for their big budget productions. Have you noticed Australia in any of your favourite films? Some of these locations may surprise you!

Australia, starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman

The name speaks for itself and with an all-star cast, Australia gave the world exclusive insight into the breathtaking locations our beautiful country has to offer. The locations sprawl across four states and territories – Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and the Northern Territory. Two months of filming took place in Bowen, located in Northern Queensland. Due to a large contribution made by the state of Queensland, the town was used for scenes depicting Darwin. Tourism in the Kimberley Ranges has grown exponentially as a result of the movie truly exemplifying the country’s striking scenery.

Ghost Rider, starring Nicholas Cage

Although the movie was set in the deep Texan south, the film was shot around Melbourne Victoria. Popular tourist destinations Collins Street, Etihad (Marvel) Stadium, Melbourne Showgrounds and even Bacchus March were all used as backdrops for the popular film.

Mission Impossible 2, starring Tom Cruise

Sydney was used predominately as the filming location for the action-packed sequel, even though the movie alluded to other destinations as its setting. Areas across Sydney modelled the quaint Spanish town of Seville, through the use of Spanish architecture. The Sydney Opera House and Botany Bay were also all on display throughout the film.

The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan

Another high budget film directed by Baz Luhrmann – part of the film was directed in Sydney. The Gatsby Mansion’s exterior was shot in Manly at the International College of Management, as well as Centennial Park and White Bay Power Station were all featured throughout the film. Fun fact: The Matrix Reloaded and Red Plant were also shot at White Bay!
