The Big Lap – Part 1

The Big Lap – Part 1

At Caravanning Australia, we love a good road trip – whether it’s a weekend away at the beach or a month-long trek into Australia’s wilderness. That’s why we decided to tackle Australia’s ultimate road trip – the Big Lap! This mammoth trek follows Australia’s spectacular coastline (with detours of course!) to show off all that the country has to offer.

We start our journey in Dunsborough, about 2.5 hours south of Perth, among the stunning beaches of the Geographe Bay. In the area you’ll be treated to sweeping views of the Indian Ocean, not to mention spectacular breweries and topnotch diving spots. What more could you ask for?

From Dunsborough, we’d recommend heading towards Albany – be sure to stop by the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk along the way for an unforgettable experience.

In Albany itself, you can’t go past a visit to the National Anzac Centre, which provides a fascinating insight into Australia’s wartime history.

From here, jump back on the road and make your way to Esperance! There’s plenty to see and do, so take your time and enjoy some detours along the way. We’d recommend Stirling National Park; Bremer Bay; and Fitzgerald National Park, 330,000 hectares of wilderness that spills out on to some of the country’s best beaches.

Once you hit Esperance, you can’t go past a visit to Cape Le Grand National Park and, of course, Lucky Bay, which is famous for the kangaroos that can be seen lounging on the white sand.

Leaving Esperance, it’s time to head inland as you make your way to Norseman and prepare to tackle to the famous Nullarbor Plain. This area is one of the most secluded spots in the country and home to Australia’s longest straight road – the 90 Mile Straight.

Before you tackle the Nullarbor Plain, be sure to do plenty of research and ensure that you are prepared – that means plenty of extra fuel and supplies! Along the way treat yourself to pit stops at iconic locations such as Eucla National Park, Border Village Roadhouse and the Nullarbor Roadhouse.

Leaving the Nullarbor Plain and the incredible Bunda Cliffs behind, make your way towards Port Lincoln, where there are plenty of tranquil coastal towns to visit as you go along.

Be sure to check back for more on the first leg of the Big Lap, and pick up the upcoming editions of Caravanning Australia to read all about the rest of this mammoth journey!
