You’ve made it to Swan Hill, so from here, it’d be a shame not to continue into South Australia to complete the full course of the Murray.
SWAN HILL TO MILDURA
Winding your way north-west along the river, you’ll soon reach Mildura, an inland centre known for its fruit – in particular, its famous oranges. If you enjoy grapes (natural or liquefied), chances are you’ve consumed some of Mildura’s finest; the area produces more than 80 per cent of Victoria’s annual crop. But there’s more to Mildura than its produce: today, it is a modern, diverse regional city, home to a vibrant arts culture, a lively sporting scene and a busy calendar of events and festivals.
Connoisseurs of Australian flora should visit the Australian Inland Botanic Gardens. Showcasing more than 20,000 plants, including more than 1500 roses, it’s an unexpected gem. Among the city’s annual festivals are those for hot air balloon enthusiasts, literary types, and jazz and country music lovers, so be sure to check what’s on when planning your trip!
MILDURA TO RIVERLAND
By now, you’ll have a new appreciation for the magnificent river and all that it offers – and the Riverland region will show you that it still has more to give! Take a secluded tour of the river by canoe or kayak, and drift past red-ochre banks and superb conservation parks that house diverse wildlife. Unwind with a stroll through Australia’s largest rose garden, Ruston’s Roses, before continuing to the Loxton Historical Village to relish the old-world charm. Make your own wine (and spirits) trail, starting at the Salena Estate winery in Bookpurnong, moving on to Berri Estates Winery in Glossop, and finishing up at the Twenty Third Street Distillery in Renmark – you’ll be astounded by the quality of these top-tier drops.
RIVERLAND TO KANGAROO ISLAND
If you’ve still got fuel in your tank and a few days to spare, follow the river to the ocean and round off your trip with a brilliant cruise on the PS Murray Princess. If you’ve had enough of roughing it, you’ll love the luxury of sitting back and letting someone else do the driving! A two-day cruising tour of Kangaroo Island will be the perfect finale to your holiday. South Australia’s top nature-based tourism destination, the island’s charming Seal Bay Conservation Park, Raptor Domain and Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park will certainly win you over.
