Walk the mighty Murray River

Walk the mighty Murray River

Immerse yourself in the beauty of the Murray River on this four-day outdoor experience. With your time split between hiking and cruising along the winding river, you’ll experience the Murray like never before and be captivated by the natural landscape along the way.

This guided walking tour along the Murray River gives you access to almost 40 kilometres of exclusive walking tracks along private property, as well as 65 kilometres of river cruising. On each day of the trip, you’ll hike an average of 10–15 kilometres through South Australia’s unique Riverland region. You’ll also be treated to relaxing afternoons and evenings aboard the houseboat, not to mention some of the most epic sunsets you’ll ever see!

This trek begins in Renmark, just under three hours from Adelaide or an hour and a half from the Victorian town of Mildura. The guided tour meets at the Hotel Renmark, before boarding a creek cruiser and enjoying the first water-bound leg of the tour. Sit back, relax, and take in the passing scenery as you embark on the 15-kilometre meander along the Ral Ral and Bulyong creeks. After disembarking, it’s time to begin the first walk of the trip.

The first walking leg of this trip will see you travel 12 kilometres to Headings Cliffs. Along the way, you’ll be able to spot an abundance of birdlife within the lagoons, making it the perfect day for birdwatching enthusiasts. You’ll also pass through the Woolenook Bend World War II Internment Camp, which housed Japanese internees and prisoners of war, who were employed as woodcutters for the Allies. Once you arrive at Headings Cliffs, you’ll be treated to sweeping views of the Murray River and can settle in aboard the houseboat that will be your accommodation for the next three nights.

On board the houseboat, you can enjoy a delicious three-course dinner and a glass of wine. Discuss the day’s adventures with your fellow walkers over dinner, before calling it a night and relaxing in your room or on deck watching the moon’s reflection on the glistening water of the Murray River.

This is just a sneak peek! To read about the rest of the journey, check out the Spring 2022 edition of Caravanning Australia.
