A trip to South Australia is not complete without a visit to the Flinders Ranges and, of course, Wilpena Pound. This region is home to some of the most unique and beautiful views in the entire country – it’s no wonder the area is a tourism hotspot!
Be sure to have your camera ready because a trip to Wilpena Pound will be full to the brim with picture perfect moments!
The 100-kilometre-wide monument stands with absolute authority in the region, as the entire rim is made up of stumps from massive mountains that have eroded as the years have gone by. The incredible landscape is estimated to be roughly 800 million years old and has been home to the Adnyamathanha people for thousands of years!
Adventurers have an abundance of activities to choose from, including bushwalking and rock climbing, not to mention scenic flights that allow you to explore places like Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park and St Mary Peak. St Mary Peak sits 1170 metres above sea level so, while it’s something that we highly recommend, this is an activity suited for this with hiking experience!
To enter Wilpena Pound, guests go through a gorge that is 11-kilometres long and eight-kilometres wide. There is even the option to go on a trek that allows visitors to climb over the rim – talk about breathtaking!
Once you’re inside, there’s a plethora of accommodation options, along with Aboriginal cultural walks and four-wheel drive tours that show you everything there is to see within Wilpena Pound. To complement the accommodation options, Wilpena Pound is perfect for glamping, as there’s plenty of places to set up under the stars – without any smog and pollution!
